Public courses
- Evening group courses for small groups of students, taught by Denisa Šmejkalová, an experienced and fully qualified teacher and translator, take place in Prague 2 – Vinohrady, just a few steps from metro station Náměstí Míru. The methodology and materials used in Beginners and Elementary courses are specifically designed for non-Slavic students. Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced courses are designed for both non-Slavic and Slavic students.
- The aim of all Active Czech courses is to provide maximally effective instruction and personal approach to every student for a reasonable price.
- In all the courses, the teacher consistently sticks to the methodological principles, which are described in detail in the section About the teacher.
- After finnishing the course students are offered a possibility to immediately continue in courses of a higher level.

- Up to 50% of the course fee can be paid with Flexi Pass, Smart Pass or Dárkový Pass.
- The tution fee does not include the course book, which you need to buy yourself. The approximate price of the books is Kč 440 for Čeština expres 1 and Čeština expres 2 and Kč 849 for Česky krok za krokem 2. The price of the course, however, includes a large number of additional study material.
- If there is a free place in the course, you can also join it during the semester. In this case you will only pay an aliquot part of the price (Kč 105 for 1 lesson).

If you wish to enroll in the Upper Intermediate course, you have to fill in a grammatical and vocabulary test first (see the "How to enroll? box). If you do not want to fill it on-line, please let me know and I will send you a diagnostical test by e-mail.

Which is the right level for you?
Beginners

For non-Slavic students with no previous knowledge of the Czech language, or for those who just know a few basic social phrases. The curriculum of this course roughly follows the course book Čeština expres 1 by L.Holá and P.Bořilová, however there is a lot of additional materials, too. In practically oriented lessons students will learn to understand and react in basic communicative situations. (introducing oneself, ordering food in a restaurant, asking for directions, speaking about family …). In this initial course the stress is put particularly on speaking and listening, however the proper attention is given also to reading and writing.

- Grammar covered: the present, the past and the future tense of basic verbs, numerals 1 – 1 000 000, personal, demonstrative and possessive pronouns,grammatical gender, the accussative sg., the locative sg., the instrumental sg., basic adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions …
Elementary

For non-Slavic students who have already taken about 60 – 70 lessons of Czech (an equivalent of Čeština expres 1 or the first eight lessons of New Czech Step by Step). To enroll in this course you should specifically know the Czech alphabet; numerals from 1 to 1 000 000; the present tense (dělám); the past tense (dělal jsem); the future tense (budu dělat); the accusative sg. (Mám sestru.); the locative (Jsem v kině.), possessive pronouns (můj, tvůj); and basic adjectives. You should be able to say a little about yourself (where you are from, what your job is, what you like, where you live) and about the people and things around you. You should be able to buy something in a shop, order food in a restaurant, say where something is (vpravo, vlevo, nahoře, dole) and when something takes place (v pondělí, odpoledne, dneska). The curriculum of this course roughly follows the book Čeština expres 2 by L. Holá and P. Bořilová.

- Grammar covered: the genitive sg., the nominative and accussative pl., the dative singular, short and long verbs of motion, most common prefixes, declension of „kdo“ and „co“, time expressions, object-centred constructions, gradation of adjectives and adverbs, verbal aspect, the conditional …
Intermediate
For both non-Slavic and Slavic students who have already reached (or almost reached) the level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. To enroll in this course, you should be already able to communicate in everyday situations and be acquainted with basic Czech grammar (the whole system of singular declension – particularly nouns; the present, the past and the future tense; the conditional, gradation of adjectives). However, you are not supposed to be perfect in all these areas and you will have opportunity to review and deepen all the mentioned grammatical areas during the course. The course curriculum roughly follows the Lesson 1 – 6 of the book Česky krok za krokem 2 by L.Holá and P. Bořilová and it systematically develops all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), although the special stress is laid on speaking, conversation and expanding students´ vocabulary. For a faster progress, classroom work is combined with homework and some self-study.
- Topics covered: Meeting people, Family relations, House and apartment, Travellers and travelling, Job interview and writing CV, Parties and holidays.
- Grammar covered: more about singular declension with the stress on relations to verbs and prepositions, the relative pronouns „který“ in all forms, selected grammar „items“, which are found difficult by foreign students …
Upper Intermediate
For both non-Slavic and Slavic students who has reached the level A2, are acquainted with basic Czech grammar and speak more or less fluently, though still simply and not without mistakes, in basic communicative situations. The course curriculum roughly follows the Lesson 7 – 13 of the book Česky krok za krokem 2 by L. Holá and P. Bořilová and it systematically develops all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), although the special stress is laid on speaking, conversation and expanding students´ vocabulary. Students will also have more opportunites to work with authentic materials, such as videos, newspaper articles or Czech fiction. For a faster progress, classroom work is combined with homework and some self-study.
- Topics covered: Shop and shopping, Traditions, Men x Women, Sports and games, Services, Holidays, Health and lifestyle, Culture and arts, At the doctor´s, Character and appearance …
- Grammar covered: time and date, ways of expressing time relations,time clauses, more about verbal aspect, more about the imperative,the nominative, the genitive, the accussative and the locative pl., plural substantives, more about prefixes …
The school reserves the right to cancel a course if there are fewer than the minimum number of students registered.
How to get there?
- The courses take place at the building of Základní škola (Elementary School), Sázavská 5, Prague 2-Vinohrady.
- The nearest metro station is Náměstí Míru (line A) – 2 minutes walk or I. P. Pavlova (line C) – 10 minutes walk.
- You can also get there by tram – number 22, 4, 10, 16 – get off at Náměstí Míru.
How to enroll?
BEGINNERS + ELEMENTARY
If you wish to enroll in the Beginners or Elementary course, please fill in the following registration form and send it to me.
UPPER INTERMEDIATE
If you wish to enroll in the Upper Intermediate course, please take the following steps:
- Fill in the grammatical and vocabulary test. This test consists of 100 simple questions (multiple choice) and it should not take you more than 30 minutes. Please do not use neither a dictionary, nor a textbook. After submitting the test, you will learn what your score is.
- If your score is between 65 and 90, fill in the registration form and send it to me. If you score less than 65 or more than 90, the level of the course might be too high (low) for you.
Those who have successfully completed the Intermediate course in Active Czech can enroll without doing the test.
If you do not want to fill in the on-line test, please let me know and I will send you a test by e-mail.
Registration formTerms of payment
After receiving your registration form, I will send you by return a confirmation of your reservation together with all the necessary information regarding the course and the terms of payment. Please note that the tuition fee has to be paid within one week after receiving this e-mail. In any case, it has to be paid before the course begins. You can pay through the bank transfer or through the postal order (which means paying in cash in any post office). Up to 50% of the course fee can be paid with Flexi Pass, Smart Pass or Dárkový Pass – if you want to use these vouchers, please state this in your registration form (and state also how much of the course fee you would like to pay with them).
